A particular nativity.

Time to dig out the Christmas crib . Mary, three wisemen , two shepherds, a little boy holding a bird, half a dozen towering angels and what appears to be a little old lady in a blue dress. Another smaller angel sitting side saddle on the roof of the stable. Joseph plays no part in this very particular nativity scene.

Madame Bay , who is here to ' do the bedrooms '  makes clucking noises as each piece is unwrapped . Half ' oh la la ' and half ' ha ha ha ' . Sometimes she is so overcome with joy she claps.  Our saintly septaguenarian is delighted, as she is every year, by everything to do with Christmas.

By the end of the morning she has rearranged all the pieces so that angels, wisemen and shepherd are all mixed up together. Rather like a chaotic village gathering.

  2. Sounds like Madame Bay's just going by experience.

    The figurines look rather grim.

  4. I remember your Christmas crib well and I still think the stern looking lady in the blue is the mother-in-law!

  6. At least the cast of characters is appropriate. I remember while living in Japan in the 90s often at this time of year one would find nativity scenes with Joseph, Mary, the baby, the magi, shepherds and of course, snow white and the seven dwarfs.

  7. Love your nativity scene.....very different, but yet interesting in its own right.
Madame Bay is like a child in her wonderment of the season, and that is a true blessing. She is an angel in disguise, of that I'm sure...you are very lucky to have her in your life.

  8. i love carved folk art figures! maybe the guy in the red jacket and beard holding a stick can be joseph.
the baby seems to be ignored back there in the manger.
rather apropos for today's world i guess.

  9. I was thinking the exact thing as tammy j - let's just make the guy with the stick Joseph! Love Kim's suggestion that the stern lady in blue is the MIL. Technically, the babe should not appear in the manger until Christmas morning but we would all miss him, so it's well he's already been placed in the pack. I do enjoy your nativity scene each year - such characters!

  10. Love the chaotic assembly. The wisemen look like their hats hurt their heads. The lambs are just adorable!

  12. Madame Bay is wonderful. I have an urge to say "ha ha oooh la la" and clap when I open my gifts this year, with no explanation. The family are sure to think I have finally flipped.

The angels looks rather Easter Islandish.

  13. Fascinating pieces, and I'm wondering where they came from. The wise men and the man in the red tunic make me think of Russia. Cute lambs.

  15. Was there ever a Joseph in the set, or did he become lost somehow. I remember my sister and I playing with my grandmother's nativity scene every year because they seemed like little dolls to us.

I wonder what Madame Bay would think if you had one of those "Crying Baby Jesus" nativities instead!
