Gold stitches.

Memorial Day weekend. The end to a busy two weeks. The family roaring with laughter as ' the font ' relates the saga of travelling through busy airports with an urn . The security supervisor at Heathrow firmly told that ' granny font ' would not be travelling in the hold and would, despite his protestations , be travelling in the cabin.  '' You'll need a doctors letter " he says eyeing the urn suspiciously. ' It's a bit late for that don't you think ! ' comes the reply.

The end of the afternoon . The first clouds building up over the mountains .  One final duty to discharge. We wander down all together to the little stream that meanders alongside the roman road . The elder trees thick with flower, a briar drooping into the water . On the bank a set of fresh deer tracks .  A line from a poem  " Love is what carries you, for it is always there , even in the dark, or most in the dark , but shining out at times like gold stitches in a piece of embroidery ". Just right .

Madame Bay is waiting for us when we get back to the house. Champagne poured. She's been busy in the kitchen making pate. Masses of pate . She cries again . Never one to hide her emotions . We all sympathize about her allergies . In her eyes - it's quite striking - a little bit of the world's goodness . A joyous end to the day.

Now it's time to move on . Later this morning cars will be packed, the house locked up, and we shall set off for the Cannes Film Festival.

  1. Oh Angus. What a few weeks you all have had. I'm so sorry about "Granny Font". Too much all at once. Please give my love to your wife. And yes, I think a trip to Cannes is just perfect for you both. Safe travels and enjoy!

  2. When our mother passed away Angus, we four kids decided we would divide Mum's ashes and spread them in the three places she had lived her life, Victoria BC, Toronto, Ontario and Southampton, UK. We certainly had some 'splainin' to do at customs when flying bits of poor Mum all over the place!
Enjoy Cannes and rubbing shoulders with the beautiful people.

  3. Two Fridays in a row, saying fare well too two love ones. That is hard on the soul. I hope the following few days away will help you and 'the font' find peace. I know I am still trying to get over last Friday's sad lost. I still go back and read, look at pictures from the other blogs that you have been so kind too keep up, that has helped me.

Glad Madame Bay was able too help you and 'the font' yesterday. It is nice when we have friends at our side in time of need.

Hope the Cannes will be all that you are expecting.

  4. Have a nice trip to Cannes, Angus, Lady Font and all the family. Amities.

  5. Oh, " the font" and I could share some stories...I remember going through Security at LGA with Petey in his travel bag in one hand and my Mom's ashes in a box in a canvas bag in the other. When I got on board, I realized that Mom"s bag wouldn't fit in the overhead as Petey, of course, had to be at my feet. Panicked, I turned to the flight attendant who took the bag and said " I'll take care of it" --pause--"No, I'll take care of her.." Tears of relief at this stranger's kindness and a hug mid-aisle. A bit later she came to my seat and in a quiet voice said Mom was traveling in the bulkhead with the pilots. We flew past Ellis Island, where Mom entered the US from Scotland as a baby, down over Washington DC where she served in the Navy in WWII, and finally to Hilton Head, the place she loved the most. The last passenger off the plane, dog and Mom once again in hand, I thanked the pilots for giving my Mom such a wonderful ride home.

  6. Gold stitches. How beautiful......

Have a wonderful and safe trip~ We are all coming, eh? lol!

  7. oh...more sympathies to you both. :-( In the greater sorrows of my life, I have come away a little stronger and a little wiser each time. I think it is "Grace" from above that allows us as humans to both shed tears and spill laughter in these most touching moments of our journey here. Experiencing both responses of our emotions brings us back front and center to the truth, "and life goes on..." ~ Golden threads stitching closure on this part of life as we enter an eternity that will never have to be closed...I like that... Have a WONDERFUL trip..

  8. stitches of gold indeed in this post.

color... sunlight... the azure sea and sumptuous surroundings!
the perfect first leg of your journey!
slap on those dark glasses. i'm thinking you and the font will
    easily be taken for celebrities!
i can see your look of woe from here! lol.
