Autumn, cold calamari and lychee macaroons.





Autumn finally arrives. A chilly 13 degrees this morning. Angus makes a mental note to have the heating boiler serviced.

Cans of calamari stacked high in the supermarket entrance. Some are ' a la basquaise ' others are ' a l'americaine ' . Both types  jumbled up haphazardly together. Perhaps there's no difference in the taste. Cold calamari from a can . Could there be any less appetizing sight before breakfast ?

Off to the bakers. The window display giving few clues as to the wonders inside. Lychee macaroons - a new product line.  Delicious.

  1. I was bit worried by the colour of some of those macaroons. Relieved to hear that they taste good.

  2. I'm not a great fan of macarrons, but I think I could be tempted by some of these wonderful looking creations (though not lychee.)

  4. Why are they rose lychee? Do they do plain lychee as well? Did you know the Chinese think of lychee as a fruit which induces body heat? Is that why they've introduced it in the autumn?

  5. This week the owner of a a dental lab that was begging the doctors forgiveness for a mistake brought us 'French macaroons' from a bakery near Washington DC--We were all a little surprised by the colors that are exactly like the ones in your picture--Needless to say, all is forgiven!

  7. Nothing says lovin' like something from the oven! Beautiful macaroons! Calimari is an acquired taste under the best of circumstances; canned calimari just sounds unnatural. Enjoy the beautiful Autumn!

  9. Those macaroons look fabulous!! Would go great with the coffee I am sipping right now!

    Other than that, I will pass on the calamari....

    PS the Jaguar is all covered up again. But another windstorm is headed our way. Maybe it will be blown over to our driveway

  10. What the U.S knows as macaroons and France knows as macarons are two very different things.
    Wishing I had one from your bakery at this very moment. Or any moment, actually.

  11. cold calamari or hot calamari ... sorry! i would rather visit my squid in an acquarium. not on a menu.
    but then i do not have a very sophisticated palet. pallet? palate. there.
    i don't even know how to spell it.
    but . . . i was glad to see the macarons. i have never eaten one and always thought they looked too pretty
    to really taste good. glad to know i was wrong!! i would love to try one. and i would love to try it in
    france!
    french bakeries look so festive don't they.
    love to my lad, and to the font . . . who really IS a gourmand. and a gourmet.
