A good job of pretending to be brave.

'The font' heads off at six thirty for the first flight to London. At seven the local French teacher shows up at the front gate with Max. Angus has agreed to dog sit Max while she drives across the frontier to Andorra for duty free wine and cigarettes. It's a school day and the new term has only just started but it's her turn to do this weekly chore on behalf of all the teachers at the lycee. It seems some things cannot be put off.

Max is a twenty month old golden. He has never been left on his own before. He is doing a valiant job at trying to be brave or at least pretend he's brave. He's been here an hour and is still sitting , staring, at the front door willing his mistress to return. It's still dark out so his bravery doesn't extend to going outside to look for her.

  1. Or is he just admiring that splendid door?
I'm sure that he'd forget about his mistress, at least temporarily, if he found his way to the font's kitchen.

  4. When I opened your post, I smiled when the photo loaded and I wondered, "Who is this lovely guy? Angus has a companion again", which in a sense you do, but only for a little while.
Max is adorable, and is being very brave.
Amazing the priorities of the teachers....miss a day of school to run off to buy wine and cigarettes....wonders never cease in your neck of the woods.

  5. We thought you might have had a companion again...guess you did for a day. One supposes that the principal is one of the recipients of cigarettes and wine. Poor Max...where does he stay on a normal school day?

  7. Finally a dog in the house - I am sure he got the best breakfast in the world and is becoming fast friends with his friend who keeps him company in his "darkest" hours ... hugs from Susanne, Daisy, Foxiie and Kiri - Foxiie the "head" of the tribe is busy educating Kiri when he is crossing borders - fifteen and still jealous...

  10. Ah, the sweet fellow. Wish there was a way to explain to him that his human will be back before he knows it. To a dog, a minute is an hour, and an hour is a day, when their loved one is away from them.

  11. He is so handsome! Sam does the same thing - he waits by the door until I return.

  12. What a sweetie. There's something heart-wrenching about a dog's total faith that the door will open and the loved human will return.

In the meantime, in this instance, I'm sure Angus has found something to distract Max from his watch.

It's lovely to see a dog on the premises, right?

  13. Oh, poor Max! I hope he didn't have to wait too long.

  14. Seeing that first photo of Max without reading the post made my heart jump. I think we all look forward to the day that the Rickety Old Farmhouse has a new brave resident of its own.

  16. Bless his heart.
I do hope this is not what Edward does when we're away.

  17. What a darling boy! He may miss his mum but after a day in your tender, loving care, he'll be absolutely bonded with you for life.
Maybe you could read the LBJ biography to him to calm him. Just don't read him the part about LBJ picking up his beagle by the ears.
