Les Anglais

' The font ' has arranged a concert to raise funds for the restoration of the frescoes in the village church .  The ancient abbey in the neighbouring market town the venue.  The concert is due to start at seven. Angus is still sploshing around happily, and absentmindedly , in the pool at six thirty. Amazing how much urgency can be relayed in the two words '' Oh Angus ! " .

We arrive trendily late. '' Gascon time " as I tell ' the ( unamused ) font '. The mayor says a few inaudible words of welcome. Madame mayors hearing aid whistles. The last of the audience arrives , banging the door as they enter. Then we're off. The organist has chosen an hours worth of jaunty pieces . The time flies. Angus has a seat underneath a medieval wood carving of a bored looking Mary and Joseph heading off to Egypt . Joseph is wearing wellington boots . Next to him a stern plaster statue of Joan of Arc slaughtering a dragon. Angus is rather alarmed to see the skewered dragon has the words 'Les Anglais ' painted on a collar round its neck.

  1. I love Joseph's wellies! Isn't it great when you spot a little detail like this?! Around us, many of the statues are of Saint Roch, showing off his blue knickers, and his dog, carrying his Jammy Dodger. (and if that confuses you, you'll have to find my blog post about it!)

I hope you will pop over to see me at Fat Dormouse getting Thinner (dormouse.blogspot.com) and join in my Giveaway.

  3. A picture is really worth a thousand words...if I had not seen the frescoe of Joseph wearing wellies, it was hard to imagine....what year did they become available?
The font is truly a good person, since organising fund raisers can be quite hazardous to one's health sometimes (I speak from experience).
As the organiser, it was her event, thus she needed to be on time, and not show up "fashionably late" on your account...shame on you Angus.

  6. Joseph and wellies, lol!! My laptop volume was way up when I played your video. The sudden sound of the organ startled me, the two dogs and the new kittens. Thanks for the wake-up, Angus!!

  7. Lady Font... wonderful to get going for restoration in your village church! Have a great day, heat is still roaring here in Southern Italy with the new gardener coming tomorrow (Ukranian) - curious of the outcome - has to cut the hedges on the cliff above the sea with 3 fourlegged helpers in black- love from Southern Italy Susanne, Daisy (no age - she is a lady), Foxiie (15) and Kiri (9 months and full of beans)

  10. Weren't the stone carvers and wood carvers and artists in general thought to have incorporated elements of themselves, family members and townsfolk in their commissions?
Well, St Joan did fight the English army and was ordered burned at the stake by a pro English bishop. It might be understandable for the words Les Anglais to appear on the symbolic beast's
collar. But it does give one an uncomfortable feeling.
I attended a school run by Catholic nuns. St Joan was way too spunky for them. We were encouraged to model our lives after saints known for prayer, self-denial, piety and good works.

  11. If you had to walk around donkeys, I think you would wear wellington boots as well!

  12. I really think you need to go back to the church and take a picture of St. Joan and the dragon for us. Hopefully the concert was a big success and the fresco restoration will soon be underway. I can't say that wearing Wellies around donkeys would be a bad idea...

  13. "Oh Angus!" Love it, well done the Font!

The wellies, ah the wellies. Joseph is clearly on his way to a music festival in the UK, donkey, Mary and babe in tow!

Very very funny post, thank you :D
