Piles of croissants, cars and a unique McDonalds.

The children back at school, the foreign visitors all gone , the farmers busy getting in the harvest. The little market town quite deserted. A pile of untouched croissants and baguettes in the bakers, empty seats at the cafe .  Parking a doddle. It'll stay this quiet until Easter. Rather eery.

The debate over replacing the aged Volkswagen continues. Keep it on the road for as long as possible or buy a replacement ? One is better for the environment. The other better for the economy. In the car park a rather sensible little four wheel drive Mini. Enough space in the back for dogs.  ' The font ' suggests we buy a Volvo. Something is said about them being both practical and stylish .

Saw this. Are there many historic McDonalds ? http://www.scoutingny.com/?p=5458

  1. I love that McDonalds! It's probably haunted with spirits who steal fries from unsuspecting diners.

  2. SHE used to have a Mini Cooper S (until SHE blew up the engine--who knew you didn't have to fill up that entire oil container in the engine.) But SHE got an Irish Wolfhound and a Deerhound X in it, no problems. It did cause mirth when SHE unloaded the dogs at the park.

  3. Well I love my 10 year old Mini Cooper, and will probably replace it with the same. It's aesthetically pleasing without being ostentatious, well built, a great drive on twisty Scottish roads, easy to park in town, and I like the idea of supporting decently paid and skilled 'proper' manufacturing jobs in my original home patch (the English Midlands).
    Cheers,
    Gail.
PS from Bertie: go for a bigger car!

  4. Would love the mini but guess a bigger car is more practical!

We have a historic McDonalds in a local town near us called Bray. Used to be the local town hall - an amazing building over 200 years old - has been a McDonalds for the past 15 years but still can't say I'm totally convinced! It was wonderful that the old derelict town hall was saved and the McDonalds signage is very minimal but still it's a McDonalds!!

  6. Gorgeous looking breads! Our next car will be electric. We are thinking Nissan Leaf as we are partial to Nissan. Not sure if you can get Nissan in France. That is one grand looking McDonalds! What a house!

  7. i'm with the scout. how great it would be if the dining porch were open. or even screened.
i envision lots of sticky greasy little fingers at child/toddler level all around that glass!
if screened, then your dog could sit there too! well, sadly not in america of course. but . . .
how wonderful though that they saved that treasure.

  8. All that uneaten bread, what a pity...perhaps bread pudding and poultry stuffing is in order!
I always vote for a car that drives safely, is reliable and has room for two or three dogs and a cat carrier.
This McDonald's is unbelievable; a remarkable job of restoration. It's unfortunate that the interior will now always reek of stale cooking oil and greasy burgers. I have never seen anything like it.

  10. Thanks for the link to Scouting NY. Wonderful post & the comments equally as interesting. I added that blog to my Facebook list. Beautiful McDonald's indeed. Also the one across from the Biltmore was pretty amazing as well. Now I want some french fries!!

  11. A small car makes the dog- human interface a bit too close if you plan on driving after the animal is wet or has rolled in something smelly or has GI distress. I know.
All of that lovely, crusty bread. Now all we need is a bit of sweet butter. Simply wonderful!

  14. Whether we can fit the dogs in it is always the first thing we look for when we look for a car! Canine comfort is an important thing.

For a long time there was a McDonald's on an old river boat down in Saint Louis, but it's not there anymore. I'm not sure if they sold it or what happened to it, but it was always busy when we were there.

  15. Volvos are good but I would want the Mini; hoping it will be my next and last car. Those breads are lovely....

  16. I vote for the mini! I would love one myself, and my children are getting older now, can't remember the last time all five of us were in the same vehicle, it's usually just me zipping around nowadays.

It is the opposite here in Az, the tourists and the "snowbirds" will soon start coming back. Things have already started to pick up a little at work the past week or so, won't be long before we are busy again.

  17. Wow, so many thoughts are going on in your head! But I really love that McDonalds! :D You’ve said it, it’s really unique. About your car dilemma though. If the VW is already showing some problems, I would suggest you consider getting a new car. I think it’ll benefit you more than the economy. So, you can stay safe on the road too.

  18. Have you come to a decision? Do you still have the aging Volkswagen with you or you’ve bought a new car? Well, in my case, for as long as I can reach my destination safely and comfortably, I’d still keep it. But, if it keeps on giving me a headache, I’d rather look for a replacement. By that, I wouldn’t have to suffer much, right?
